Beauty and The Couple
Maybe it’s because men are becoming more aware of the benefits of cosmetic treatments or maybe it’s the bonding that happens when people do something unique together, but whatever the reason couples are increasingly seeking cosmetic services together. Whether getting the same type of service like Botox, liposuction or laser hair removal or whether they’re seeking different types of services and having them performed at that same time, cosmetic services for couples are on the rise.
Even though more men are becoming interested in cosmetic services, it is often the case that their female partners have researched the services available, compared pricing and educated themselves about treatment. A woman’s satisfaction with the result of her own cosmetic treatment can encourage her male partner to join her for her next follow up or consultation and perhaps get a consultation of his own. The number of male patients seeking plastic and reconstructive surgery is on a steady incline and men currently account for 9% of all cosmetic services performed in the US.
For couples that are older, beauty services can be a way to rejuvenate self-esteem and rebuild the couple’s bond after working to make a home together and raise a family. Eye surgeries are popular with both older men and women while tummy tucks are one of the most requested surgical procedures among women and gynecomastia (or male breast reduction) is popular with men.
The desire to get work done together may also stem from what psychologists call “the social matching theory,” which proposes that an individual will tend to be attracted to, and pair off with, another individual of a similar degree of physical attractiveness. As one partner seeks to enhance their appearance with services such as Botox or breast enhancements the other partner may be inspired to maintain their looks in an effort to continue to match them.
Sometimes it’s simply that both members of the couple are unable to lose extra fat through diet and exercise alone and look to surgical services to help them reach their aesthetic goals.
