Lasers Mean Less Pain, Time & Money

For a long time, the only permanent solution for hair removal was electrolysis. A thin metal probe was inserted into each hair follicle and a small amount of electricity would be sent through the probe to kill the follicle and eliminate the hair. Unfortunately, because each individual hair follicle would need to be treated and the procedure had to be repeated several times, the process was exceedingly slow and painful – only a small area could be done in one session. In addition, the patient was often charged by the square inch and never knew how many treatments would be required. Worse, many hair types were not treatable through electrolysis.
Laser therapies generate specially focused light to penetrate and destroy the hair follicle and though some patients may require more than one treatment, larger areas may be treated and once the therapy sessions are complete, the results are permanent – meaning no more cuts, smelly chemicals or painful sessions.
There are several different types of laser energy generating equipment that may be used, depending upon the hair type or color of the skin of the patient. The most common include
• Alexandrite – which is most effective on light-colored skin
• Pulsed Diode Array – this is useful for light to medium skin
• YAG Laser – safest for dark skin but effective on most skin types
• Pulsed Light Therapy – also known as Ultimate light, this is the newest of the laser therapies, is adjustable and considered safe for all skin types
Laser hair removal is safe and effective for both men and women. Men who have excessive amounts of body hair often request hair removal for the back and shoulders, while women are more likely to have hair removal in the bikini area or on the face.
Following laser hair removal therapy, patients can experience some irritation and swelling but the effects have been minimized with the use of newer, more focused machines. Some patients may benefit from cold compress application immediately after the procedure, followed by a series of moisturizers to help the skin to recover as quickly as possible. Most patients experience no more discomfort than a minor sunburn.
Lasers, radiofrequency and ultrasound procedures are becoming more and more common for all sorts of cosmetic issues, including hair removal, because they are more effective, require less recovery time and offer lasting results. As these improvements in medical technology become available they are quickly making slow and painful treatments, like electrolysis and chemical depilatories, a thing of the past.
