Everyone knows about facelifts, breast implants, tummy tucks and other procedures that can help create a new, more youthful looking you, but something that is often overlooked (or hidden beneath clothing) are the arms. Aging, fluctuations in weight or even simple genetics can cause you to have excessive, drooping skin hanging from your arms. An Arm Lift procedure, also known medically as “brachioplasty” can help restore a youthful look to your arms, which may be so pleasing that you want to show off and wear a tank top or a strapless gown. Leif Rogers, MD has performed many lift surgeries and helped many patients become more confident in showing off their arms and bodies.  You can click here to see a before and after photo of one of Dr. Rogers’ patients and here to see a more before an after photos.

Description of procedure

An Arm Lift is performed to remove or reduce excess fat and skin from the elbow to the underarms. It also works to tighten and smooth the supporting structure that gives definition to the arm. During the procedure an incision will be made, usually along the inner portion under the arm or along the back of the arm depending upon your particular needs. If there is excess fat it can be surgically removed during the procedure or through liposuction.  After the excess skin and fat have been removed, the skin will be smoothed over the newly contoured arm and carefully sewn back together to minimize scarring.

After the procedure

You will most likely be advised to remain on bed rest for several days and will need someone to drive you home as Arm Lift surgery usually requires sedation. Dressing or bandages will be applied to your incision and you may be required to wear a pressure bandage to minimize swelling. In some cases, a small tube may be placed to allow for drainage from the surgery site. Nearly all patients will experience some pain, swelling and bruising though this is temporary and will subside with time.  Stitches are usually removed within two weeks and patients are be able to return to normal activity within a month.

Who is a good candidate?

In general, any adult with a large amount of droopy skin or excessive skin and fat may be a good candidate for an arm lift. Candidates for Arm Lift surgery should be at a stable weight, not considered obese and in good health. All plastic or cosmetic surgery patients who are smokers are advised to quit smoking before the procedure to allow for maximum healing as smoking can inhibit healing factors. Those with medical conditions that impair healing or increase medical risks during surgery are not good candidates for an Arm Lift.

If you are considering Arm Lift surgery, it is also helpful to have an optimistic attitude with realistic expectations. Dr. Rogers and his staff can help you determine your needs and show you potential outcomes of an arm lift surgery or any other type of cosmetic procedure that you are considering.
