The word cancer can be one of the scariest words in the English language and hearing the word can trigger deep fear and despair for both patients and their loved ones, who often feel uncertain about where to turn for support. In many cases patients hear about the disease and what it really means for the first time during their initial diagnosis. Cancer is a complicated and far reaching disease and sometimes the worst part for a patient is how little they know and where to turn for guidance, support and information. Fortunately, there are resources like the Cancer Support Community for both victims of cancer and their loved ones.

Cancer Support Community (CSC) is an international group that provides support, education and hope to those affected by cancer and their friends and loved ones. They offer personalized services and education about cancer and bring high quality mental health professionals and social support services to millions of people around the globe each year. Support and educational offerings are available through their website and through a network of community centers, groups, hospitals and oncology practices. Leif Rogers, MD is and advocate for patient education and believes that information and support are key for conquering both the disease and the fear surrounding it.

Cancer Support Community offers the chance for victims (and family and friends alike) to join online groups, start local chapters and even set up a webpage for a particular person or type of cancer – which can be used for communication and even fundraising. CSC has a local chapter, located in West Los Angeles.

Dr. Rogers devotes fifty percent of his practice to breast cancer patients and their recovery. He donates time and services to patient education and contributed to CSC’s Breast Reconstruction guide book which serves to guide women through the options they have after mastectomy. Dr. Rogers has been a featured speaker at some of the local West Los Angeles Chapter events and also contributes to the CSC “Frankly Speaking” series, which serves to educate patients and family members about the realities of cancer, options, survival and recovery.

With their global network of mental health professionals, a menu of personalized services and education and professionally-led community-based centers, CSC strives to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. The resources they make available all over the world are supporting the effort to make sure that no one has to face cancer alone.

If you or a family member are or have been a victim of breast cancer, or other types of cancer that would benefit from a reconstructive surgery – contact us for a consultation.
