Scar Revision

Scars are commonly caused by accident, injury, burns, surgery, or skin disorders. Scarring can affect self-confidence and in some cases can diminish the function of the muscles, tendons and nerves in the body.

There are many types of scarring and treatment options vary depending on the type of injury and the quality of the healing process. The healing process of a wound or injury begins with inflammation, progresses to the formation of tissue and ends with the modification of essential proteins such as collagen. Scar tissue forms at the edges of a wound and formation is affected by the level of natural elasticity in the skin and the amount of collagen available in the body at the time of recovery.

The three basic treatments for scar revision are topical treatments, minimally invasive procedures like lasers, and surgical revision. The procedure used depends on the condition and location of the scar and amount of the scar tissue to be treated.

Topical treatments such as steroids and chemical peels can improve the appearance of smaller, finer scars. Steroids can also be injected into scars to reduce their size. Photo rejuvenation uses an energy-delivering device to smooth the texture of the skin. Laser resurfacing treatments can be tailored for specific types of scars and can help prevent the recurrence of scar tissue. Surgical procedures such as Z-plasty, skin grafting, tissue expansion and flap surgery can be used to address larger more complicated cases.

While no scar can be completely removed, the techniques for scar revision have come a long way towards minimizing the visibility and improving the look and feel of scar tissue.
