SIEA Flap

Superficial Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap

Like the DIEP, the SIEA replaces the skin and soft tissue removed at mastectomy with living tissue borrowed from the abdomen. For the DIEP flap procedure blood vessels are attached from the upper abdomen, but some women have adequate blood vessels just under the skin in the lower abdomen, which can be used as the feeding vessels for the transferred tissue, in this case a SIEA Flap procedure is recommended – otherwise the procedures are the same. In addition to reconstructing the breast, the contour of the abdomen is improved with results similar to that of a tummy tuck.

A full consultation is required to determine if SIEA Flap surgery is right for you.
